"About our Credit Union"

Credit Unions in Britain

Credit Unions are financial services businesses owned and run by their members to provide them with:

  • easy ways to save;
  • access to low-cost, affordable loans;
  • fair and straightforward bank accounts; and
  • a range of other useful services to help them manage their money wisely.

In Britain credit unions are registered with the Financial Services Authority and aim to support local communities by opening up access to user-friendly financial services to everyone who wishes to benefit from them. They are part of a worldwide Movement of 42,705 credit unions serving 157 million members in 92 different countries.

Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union (HEYCU)

Formed by a dedicated group of volunteers in 1999, HEYCU’s mission is to give everyone who lives or works in East Yorkshire (including the City of Hull) access to a range of affordable, excellent value financial services.

We will achieve this by creating a sustainable co-operative business which:

  • is locally run by and for its members;
  • shares out its surplus with its members;
  • aims to keep money within the local economy; and
  • works for local people and helps to build the capacity of their communities.

HEYCU is one of 450 Credit Unions in the United Kingdom, and is affiliated to the Association of British Credit Unions (ABCUL). We are registered under the Data Protection Act and a member of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and the Financial Ombudsman Service. You can check our registration with the Financial Services Authority at www.fsa.gov.uk/register

WORLD COUNCIL OF CREDIT UNIONS' PROJECT

Since our tenth anniversary year, we have been asking our members to donate their small change in order to make a big difference to the lives of children in Africa.

Our first project has been to provide school uniforms for the kindergarten class at Mago Primary School in Bondo, Kenya.  Thanks to the generosity of HEYCU members we have already sent almost £250, which allowed at least 40 uniforms to be provided.

Mago School is in a very poor area of Bondo with an AIDS orphan rate of about 30%. Many of the younger children do not have uniforms and often arrive at school with very worn, out of shape or even torn, clothing. Uniforms give the children a sense of identity and belonging. They do a lot to improve the children's self image, which helps them to learn better.

The children of Mago School, staff of the World Council of Credit Unions' Kenya Project and the international credit union family thanks all donors for their support of the global community.

If you would like to support this project, ask the Credit Union staff to pay your donation into Charity Share Account 999997.
