On Thursday 16 October 2025, credit union members around the world will celebrate the 77th International Credit Union Day (ICU Day).
It’s an annual event to commemorate the impact and achievements of the worldwide Credit Union Movement and each year a different theme is chosen for the celebrations.
The theme this year is ‘Co-operation for a Prosperous World’. Credit unions are member-owned and run financial co-operatives that provide a wide range of safe savings and affordable credit options for their members, with fairness, accessibility for all, and service as their guiding mission. They are there to serve their members not make money out of them.
Across the world there are over 74,000 credit unions in 104 countries, with more than 411 million members between them and they are widely recognised as a force for positive economic and social change.
In the UK, HEY Credit Union is proud to serve nearly 20,000 members across North and East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. It looks after members’ Savings of over £15 million, and over the past 26 years has granted 90,000 loans to a value of £67 million, saving its members an estimated £30 million in interest charges. This year HEY Credit Union was judged UK Treating Customers Fairly Champions in the Smart Money People Consumer Credit Awards, after receiving 1,000 glowing reviews from its member-users.
HEY Credit Union’s Chief Executive, Matthew Stevens, says: “Each year International Credit Union Day offers our members, staff and volunteers an opportunity to remember our proud history and celebrate the positive impact credit unions make for the people and communities they serve. We’re very proud to have been able to help thousands of our members to save for the first time ever and obtain fair and responsible loans that support their financial wellbeing. It’s all part of our Credit Union difference.
